ECOTOURS
Geological Landscape:
The region of the Paraiban Cariri is characterized for it's beautiful
rocky landscapes, located amid low vegetation, the bush caatinga.
The Lajedo of Pai Mateus, situated in this region, is a one-square
kilometre rocky elevation, shaped as an inverse soup plate, over which
around one hundred huge round granite blocks are disposed, creating one
of the planet's most unusual and exquisite pictures in the world. Among
the few regions in the globe to have similar geological characteristics
(Devil's Marbles on the Australian Outback, Erongo Mountains on Namibia
and the Hoggar region on Argelia) this is undoubtedly the most beautiful
and untouched.
Mystical Energy:
Many places in the world are referred to as 'mystical', 'full of energy' etc.
Lajedo do Pai Mateus, due to it's unique beauty and to the fact that it has
functioned as a ceremonial center for the pre-historical indigenous peoples
who inhabited the region for at least 10.000 years, is one of this places.
Its 'positive vibration' doesn't go unnoticed by the visitors with some sensibility
or who are open for this kind of mystical experience. There are many reports of
visitors who felt 'reenergized' by the simple contemplation of a sunset in Pai Mateus.
Hospitality:
The inhabitants of Cariri descend directly from the Tapuia Indians, who have
inhabited this region for a long time. The Tapuia culture defends hospitality and
this won't go unnoticed to the visitors. The constant smile on the lips of the
locals and the cordial and straightforward way in which they get along evoke
concepts long forgotten by our 'modern society'.
Mountain Biking:
The trail that leaves the seat of Hotel Fazenda Pai Mateus, passing through
the places known as Saca de Lã, Lagoa de Bento, Lajedo da Salambaia and Sítio do
Bravo is presently considered to be Brazil's best path for mountain bike in rocky
terrain. Its qualities are comparable or even beyond the famed Slick Rock Trail,
in Moab, Utah, considered to be the United States' best trail. Renata Falzoni, an
ESPN Brazil reporter who specializes in action sports, and Paulinho de Tarso
Martins, an associate of Sampa Bikers, a bicycle-tourism company that takes its
clients to endure the best mountain biking trails in Brazil and the world, claims this.
Bouldering:
The area of the Lajedo do Pai Mateus has the biggest number of bolders apt for
climbing in the entire country. There are hundred of giant, round granite blocks,
encompassing different difficulty degrees. Marco Piffer - one of Brazil's foremost
mountaineers - considers Cariri to be one of the world's best regions for the
practicing of boldering (Nez Adventure Magazine, May 2002). This modality of
climbing is the one that has been attracting the most people in the planet
(Terra Magazine, April 2002) for characteristics such as:
Easily-accessible sites, less expensive equipment and trips, large technical,
physical and specially mental challenge, bringing a deep satisfaction to the
bolderers, without exposing them to the risk of suffering serious accidents.
These characteristics, among many others, make Cariiri and specially Hotel Fazenda
Pai Mateus a true Disneyland for the action sports enthusiasts of all ages,
a 'paradise' for the sympathizer of mystical practices or just a special place
for people who travel around seeking peacefulness, serenity and authentic
relationships.
