Along with the Amazon Basis, the Pantanal is one of the last virgin
areas on the face of earth. A huge lowland plain, it is entirely overgrown
by luxuriant vegetation dotted by thousands of rainbow colored flowers
which bloom during the rainy season (January - June). It shelters innumerable
rivers and crystal clear lakes.

Capital of the State of Bahia, and was also Brazil's capital until 1763, is divided in two parts. The "Lower City" is at sea level and contains the old port and the commercial area where visitors will find a complete and varied assortment of Brazilian arts and crafts at the Mercado  Modelo (Model Market). It is also the best place to witness a demonstration of "capoeira", a martial art developed by African slaves in Brazil, originally as a form of combat and later as a type of dance and folklore tradition. .

The "Upper City" can be reached by stone steps, alleyways or the famous Lacerda Elevator. This part of the city contains the old government buildings, the residential districts, museums, churches and much of the newer architecture.

Ouro Preto was founded in the early 18th century. It was built on rocky ground and declared a national monument in 1933. It is the masterpiece of colonial architecture in Brazil with fountains, churches, ruins and towers shining with colored tiles. Due to its distance from the coast, it is the only town in Brazil to remain as an outstanding artistic and architectural example of that era. Ouro Preto's baroque architecture can be viewed upon as typically Brazilian.
